The Area

Nearby is the National Trust property of Cragside House & Gardens.

Built by the great Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, Cragside was the first house in the world to be powered by hydro-electricity. The house and gardens are open for visitors and you can easily spend a full day there

Just to the south of the village are the Simonside Hills. Heather-clad and popular with walkers and mountain bikers, the hills offer miles of tracks and footpaths which boast some of the very best views in the county. Simonside also hides some clues to past residents of the region in the shape of Cup & Ring marked rocks – rock art carved into the limestone by prehistoric people.
