This is a region steeped in history and
visitors to Northumberland marvel at its varied and largely
unspoilt heritage. Everything from the weathered battlements
of ancient castles and early Christian settlements, to imposing
Roman remains and industrial working museums attract visitors
to this region time after time. Northumberland is undoubtedly
Britain’s best-kept secret, a magnificent county with an atmosphere
all of its own. The region can also boast some of the best
shopping and recreation facilities in the country. Newcastle
city centre, the Gateshead MetroCentre, historic Durham and
the magnificent city of Edinburgh are all within driving distance.
Thistleyhaugh is a picturesque Georgian
farmhouse situated on the banks of the River Coquet in the
heart of rural Northumberland. Set in 720 acres of farmland,
this beautiful rural retreat is the ideal location from which
to sample the rugged beauty of the Cheviot Hills, the striking
Coquetdale landscape and the magnificent Northumberland coastline.
Henry and Enid
Nelless are the third generation of working farmers, who for
over 100 years have tended the land, reared their livestock
and been guardians of the countryside in this idyllic part
of Northumberland. They work in harmony with nature and have
embarked on projects to preserve a natural environment for
indigenous wildlife. Thistleyhaugh working farm dates back
to 1780 and retains much of the charm and many of the historic
features found in a traditional Georgian farmhouse. These
characteristics are combined with a wide range of modern amenities
and thoughtful home comforts that make Thistleyhaugh such
a special place to stay.
